Firstly, you are not alone and whilst not getting the mark you want is sometimes soul destroying, its not the end of the world. It would be easy to spiral into a cycle of doom and gloom following a bad result, but actually its not all bad. Granted, nobody wants extra work but occasionally having to do extra revision or process feedback from an assignment can help us learn and become more resilient.

Failure, unfortunately, is part of life and most will know that feeling of disappointment. Having that appreciation of what it is like to try as hard as you feel you can, only to be disappointed by the outcome is not that uncommon within the process of rehabilitating someone, except that someone is a patient and they are likely to be trying to recover from an injury or illness. Having experienced failure makes us more empathetic and potentially more intuitive as to how to support that person through the challenging and frustrating emotions.

Whilst these life skills are all well and good, if you have failed an assignment or exam recently it may be you just need a little extra support. I have supported many students with assignments that require resubmission from short pieces of reflection through to dissertations that require just a little more focus to achieve the learning outcomes. Often it comes down to not quite understanding the learning outcomes, struggling with references and citations or just finding academic writing in general a difficult skill to learn.

Ultimately there is nothing wrong in failing but it is a problem if you don’t make use of the feedback and support available to learn from mistakes or advice.  If you feel you might benefit from talking through, or being shown how you can improve your assignment then contact me for a free 30 minute introductory chat, with no obligation to pay for any sessions.

I look forward to hearing from you.
